I’m now officially almost retired!  After 40 years of woodturning, 25 full time and selling at the Salt Spring Saturday Market, I’ve given up my spot at the Market, stopped gathering new wood, and I’m now just finishing my very best blanks for Gallery 8 and Coast Gallery. Which leaves me with an embarrassment of wood blocks and blanks that already have an investment of time and effort. They now need to find someone else’s shop in which to continue their journey.

And thus is launched Bob’s Wood Stash (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bob McKay, woodturner)– an astonishing array of bits and pieces of wood that were too beautiful to toss in the stove, as well as disks, spindle stock and roughed out bowl blanks. The majority is boiled and air-dried arbutus menziesii, (that’s Pacific madrone or madrona south of the Border) mostly burl, and the rest is mostly air-dried big leaf maple burl, much of it spalted.

To get off to a roaring start, I’m teaming up with my good friend Kurt Frost, a lifelong boatbuilder and woodturner, who has fully retired and is selling all his tools and wood collection. We’re having a ‘yard sale’ from 9-4 on Saturday April 16 at Kurt’s studio, 128 Cusheon Lake Road on Salt Spring Island.
